That Windsor victory was five months ago now, and since then the form figures read 6-6 with a non-completion in between, which means the horse has found things tough in its most recent outings. It raced just yesterday, so whatever happened is still fresh.

The partnership with jockey Sean Bowen is one of the more striking threads in this story. Together they have won 2 of their 6 races — that is 1 in every 3, or a 33% win rate — which is an excellent return and well above what you would expect from a random combination of horse and rider. When Bowen is booked for this horse, something is usually expected.

The one area where Roaring Conquest has genuinely struggled is at the top level. In three races against the very best competition — Class 1 events, the kind that attract the elite horses in Britain — the record reads zero wins from three attempts. That is not a disgrace; most horses never even get a run in races like that. But it does suggest that the horse is most dangerous when dropped back into slightly less rarefied company.

Olly Murphy's yard is in strong form regardless, having sent out 146 winners already this season — a volume that tells you this is a serious, well-resourced operation that knows how to place its horses. With Roaring Conquest currently active and a jockey partnership that clicks at a rate of 1 in 3, there may well be more wins to come, provided the yard find the right race rather than pitching it against the very best again.
