Risk It All

The recent form is actually more encouraging than it looks at first glance. His last six races show two runner-up finishes, a third, and a fourth — a sequence that suggests a horse knocking on the door rather than one going backwards. He raced just yesterday, which tells you the team are keeping him busy and clearly think there is something to work with.

Gary and Josh Moore, who train him out of their yard in Lower Beeding in West Sussex, have had a productive season by any measure — 99 winners sent out so far. That is a yard operating in serious volume and with clear ability, so when one of their horses keeps finishing second and third without winning, you take notice of what the trainer says. Gary Moore has been candid about it: Risk It All was a frustrating horse last season, but he has always shown plenty in his work at home, suggesting the talent is there even if the results have been elusive. The view from the yard is that he may simply have been too immature to put it all together last winter — and crucially, he has had a wind operation since then, the kind of procedure that can genuinely unlock a horse by helping it breathe more efficiently when the race gets serious.

He has been tried three times at Class 4 level — a solid mid-tier — without winning, but the places keep coming. If the wind surgery does what Moore hopes, and if the maturity the trainer has sensed in home work translates to the track, Risk It All could be one of those horses who goes from perennial nearly-man to surprise package. He has done everything but win. At some point, that has to change.
