Riggs

The ground matters enormously with Riggs. On normal conditions he has won 2 from 13 races, a win rate of around 15%, or roughly 1 in every 6 to 7 times out. That might not sound spectacular, but it is comfortably his best surface, and it tells you the team will be watching the weather forecast closely before committing him to a race.

Jockey Liam McKenna has clearly built a strong understanding with him. In six races together they have won twice — that is a 33% win rate, or 1 in every 3 rides. For a horse who wins as rarely as Riggs does overall, that partnership looks genuinely significant. When McKenna is in the saddle, something works better.

Where Riggs has quietly fallen short is at the top level. In four races at Class 2 — the upper tier of British racing — he has not won once. That is not necessarily a knock on him; plenty of honest, capable horses find that level just a stretch too far. His record suggests he is most dangerous when dropping back into races where the competition is a little less intense.

He has not won in his last six races, and his recent form makes fairly grim reading: a second place is the only bright spot across that run. But here is the thing — he raced just yesterday, which means P Cluskey's yard in Balbriggan is still actively campaigning him. At 11, Riggs is no youngster, and the fact that the team keeps putting him out there says something. They clearly believe there is at least one more decent day left in him. Whether that day comes soon is another question, but with the right ground and Liam McKenna aboard, you would not write him off entirely.
