The breeding is worth a look. The father, Soldier's Call, made his name as a speedy two-year-old who won on the biggest stages in Europe, and he's passing that early pace on to plenty of his offspring. The mother's side brings influence from Champs Elysees, a horse associated with stamina and class on the flat. Whether Red Lily has inherited the father's zip, the mother's staying power, or a useful blend of both is exactly the kind of question a first race is designed to answer.
What we do know is that this two-year-old is coming out of a yard that is very much firing at the moment. Eddie and Patrick Harty, based at the Curragh in County Kildare — the heartland of Irish racing — have sent out 16 winners already this season. That's a training operation with horses ready to run and run well, which matters more than people might think. A horse making its debut from a yard in that kind of form tends to arrive at the track fit, schooled, and with a real chance of running a big race first time out.
Beyond that, we wait and see. Red Lily is a clean slate — and in racing, that's a kind of promise all by itself.
