Raincloud

The recent form makes for difficult reading. Looking at the last six races, Raincloud has finished eighth, ninth, ninth, and eleventh on the occasions it completed, with two runs where no finishing position was recorded — likely non-completions. There is no obvious upward curve here, no sign of a horse beginning to click with a new approach or fresher legs. It is currently racing — having run within the last day — so whatever this horse is, it is still being asked the question.

Jockey Kieran O'Neill has been the one asking that question most often, riding Raincloud seven times without a win between them. That kind of partnership can sometimes be a trainer's way of saying they believe a combination will eventually unlock something, but seven attempts with nothing to show for it is a long road of faith. The horse does most of its racing at Class 4, which is solidly mid-tier British racing — not the glamour events, not the bottom rung either — and across 15 races at that level, it has won none of them. Fifteen chances at the level it is supposedly best suited to, and it has not converted once.

What makes Raincloud worth a moment's thought is simply the persistence of everyone involved. Some horses get a handful of chances and disappear. This one has been given 37, which suggests the team around it genuinely believes there is a race to be won somewhere. Whether that belief is well-founded or quietly optimistic at this point is another question entirely. For now, Raincloud remains one of racing's nearly horses — always present, never quite arriving.
