The recent form figures tell an interesting story, though. Reading them from oldest to most recent — 3, 12, 5, 7, 8, 9 — you can see a horse that showed early promise with that third-place finish, then had a rough patch in the middle, and has since settled into a pattern of finishing in the pack without threatening the front. That said, Queensmaite raced just yesterday, which at least confirms the team are keeping faith and giving the horse every opportunity to find its stride.
Roy Bowring trains out of Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire, a small yard that has sent out five winners this season — a respectable total that suggests Bowring knows how to place a horse when the moment is right. Queensmaite has run three times at Class 5 level, which is where most horses at this stage of development compete, and has yet to win any of them. The challenge now is finding the right race — the right conditions, the right distance, the right day — to unlock whatever is sitting beneath the surface. Five winners from the yard this season means Bowring has done it before. Whether Queensmaite can become the sixth is the question worth watching.
