What gives the profile some shape is who's doing the training. Richard Hannon's yard at Herridge in Wiltshire has sent out 118 winners already this season — that's not a stable that hides its good horses, and it's not a stable that struggles to get results. When a yard is operating at that volume, they tend to know exactly what they have. Quantum Swift sitting on three races without a win means either the horse needs more time, or it's finding life tough at its current level.
The recent form reads 2-5-4, working backwards from the most recent race — so a fourth, then a fifth, then a second. That second-place finish is the one flicker of promise in there, but the trend since then has been moving in the wrong direction. Racing a two-year-old three times in quick succession is normal — young horses are often thrown into the deep end early to find their level — but the slide from second to fourth to fifth isn't what the team will have been hoping for. Yesterday's race was its most recent, so the yard are clearly keeping the horse busy and looking for answers.
At this point, Quantum Swift is a work in progress. Two-year-olds can improve dramatically as the season goes on, and being trained by one of Britain's most prolific yards is about as good a situation as a young horse can be in. Whether there's a win around the corner remains to be seen.
