Purosangue

The high point came at York on 14 October 2023, when Purosangue landed a Class 1 victory — one of the biggest wins available in British racing. It was a genuine statement, the kind of result that suggests a horse capable of competing at the highest level on its day. The first win had come four months earlier at Haydock Park, so for a brief window in 2023, everything seemed to be clicking into place. The problem is that was now 32 months ago, and the wins have dried up completely since. Six races without a victory, with recent finishes of sixth, sixth, fourth, tenth, fourth, and fourth — plenty of placing, but never quite getting there.

Robert Cowell's Newmarket yard has been in fine form this season, sending out 24 winners, so the operation around Purosangue is clearly functioning well. Oisin Murphy, one of the most decorated jockeys in the country, has partnered the horse 10 times without a win between them — 0 from 10 is a striking number, and while it would be unfair to read too much into it, it does suggest the partnership has yet to find its best result. Purosangue raced just one day ago, so it is very much an active participant in the sport right now.

The question hanging over a horse like this is whether that York win represents a ceiling that has already been touched, or a standard it can one day return to. Eight places from 23 races tells you this is not a horse that embarrasses itself — it competes, it finishes in the frame, it turns up. But there is a difference between being there and winning, and Purosangue has not crossed the line first in a long time.
