After a win at Musselburgh, Derham was candid about what he had seen: Pure Carbon had shown real toughness under pressure, something the trainer admitted had not always been visible before. Derham also noted that the horse genuinely appreciates faster, drier ground, which matters — a horse with a preference like that can be placed carefully to give it every possible advantage, and that is exactly what a shrewd yard does.

The record at Class 4 level — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing, one step below the elite — reads 1 win from 7 races, which on its own looks modest. But context helps here: Pure Carbon only landed his first career win in November 2025 at Huntingdon, and the more recent results suggest the penny has dropped. Jockey Paul O'Brien has been the regular partner throughout, riding 12 of the horse's 15 races together and winning 2 of them — not a flashy ratio, but the pair have clearly built a working relationship over time.

What makes Pure Carbon worth watching right now is the timing. A horse that is winning races, raced just yesterday, and has a trainer publicly talking about progressive improvement through the spring is a horse in form and in focus. Derham said early on that he believed this horse could eventually develop into a smart chaser — a jumping specialist over fences, the more demanding discipline. That ambition has not gone away, and with Pure Carbon finally showing the toughness and consistency his trainer always suspected was there, the next chapter looks like it could be the most interesting one yet.
