Punchbowl Flyer

That single victory came at Chepstow on 14 August 2025, and it clearly meant a great deal to trainer John O'Shea's yard in Newham-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. O'Shea has spoken warmly about the horse over the years, and the key to unlocking him has always been simple: rain. Lots of it. The trainer has been blunt on the subject — Punchbowl Flyer cannot cope with fast or even normal ground, and genuinely comes alive when the mud is flying. On a wet, churned-up track, he is a different animal. The problem, of course, is that you cannot order the weather, which goes a long way to explaining why a horse that clearly has ability has managed to win only once from 39 attempts.

His recent form tells a familiar story — finishing eighth, third, fourth, fourth, second and fourth across his last six runs. Plenty of places, no wins. He has not won since that Chepstow day eight months ago, and his partnership with jockey Charles Bishop, though well-established across ten races together, has not yet produced a winner between them. At the top end of the sport — Class 2 races, some of the better contests in Britain — he has raced eight times without winning, which is tough but not surprising for a horse so dependent on specific conditions.

The yard itself is in decent nick, having sent out nine winners this season, so the support around Punchbowl Flyer is not lacking. What he needs is a wet autumn afternoon at the right track. If the forecast ever lines up, he has shown he can deliver — and for a horse that has given this much without much reward, that day at Chepstow will have felt well earned.
