Mrs Williams has noted that he spent the early summer in impressive form, winning three races in a row before a short break, then picked up exactly where he left off in the autumn. That kind of consistency — a purple patch in summer, a big win in autumn — is the sign of a horse being managed carefully and competing at the right level. His weight rating has only crept up by 1lb since that October win, which means he's still competitive on paper.

One thing worth knowing: he needs the ground to be right. Wet, muddy conditions don't suit him. What he wants is spring ground with a bit of moisture in it — firm enough to move on, soft enough not to jar. Mrs Williams has suggested he could be aimed at one of the regional national races in spring, the long-distance chases that are a staple of the jumping calendar. Given his record over three miles-plus and his preference for that kind of ground, it makes obvious sense. Jockey Isabel Williams, who has partnered him in 14 of his 34 races, knows him well — though the pair have only won together once. His recent form shows a mix of mid-field finishes and one blank, but with a big win only six months ago and the yard clearly thinking about something specific this spring, Puddlesinthepark is very much a horse still pointing forward.
