The partnership with jockey Brian Hughes is at the heart of what makes him tick. When you see those two names next to each other on the racecard, you pay attention. Hughes knows the horse inside out, and after Presentandcounting suffered a fall at Ayr in the spring of 2025, it was Hughes who described how the horse had needed time to get his confidence back before last summer's win at Uttoxeter. That win came over three miles, and Hughes had specifically wanted to make the race a test of stamina — which says a lot about how well he reads this particular horse.

Uttoxeter is where Presentandcounting belongs. He has won twice from just three races there, and his most recent victory came on 27 July 2025. That kind of record at a single track isn't luck — it suggests the horse genuinely suits the shape and feel of the place. His career highlight was a Class 2 win at Worcester in September 2022, which is one of the better levels of racing in Britain, and it remains the peak of what he has achieved.

His current form makes for interesting reading: in his last six races, he has finished second, fourth, fifth, third, third, and first. The win is there, the places are stacking up, and he raced just one day ago — so whatever is next will come quickly. He is trained by Donald McCain at Cholmondeley in Cheshire, a yard that has sent out 55 winners this season alone, so the operation around him is in fine health.

Most of his career has been spent at Class 3 level, where he has won 4 of 15 races — 27%, or roughly 1 in every 4. At 12, he is not a horse building towards anything. He is simply a horse who still wants to race, still knows how to win, and clearly still enjoys it.
