Popmaster won at Ascot in July, one of the most famous racecourses in the world, and then followed it up two months later by winning a Class 1 race at Newbury — as high as British racing gets. Trainer Ed Walker, whose yard at Upper Lambourn has sent out 76 winners this season alone, had been pointing him at exactly these kinds of occasions, and Popmaster delivered when it mattered most. Owner Laurence Bellman described it as the moment that had been coming, tracing the confidence back to a run at Chelmsford that had quietly set the whole sequence up. The frustration of near-misses in races like the Stewards' Cup and the Kensington Palace made the eventual breakthrough feel genuinely earned.

The key to unlocking Popmaster has always been the ground. On wet or muddy going he has won 2 of his 5 races — a 40% win rate that is extraordinary — while on faster ground that number falls sharply. Walker has said publicly that he expects Popmaster to run a big race when conditions are soft, and the horse's whole profile backs that up. He is at his best when the ground is testing and the field has to dig in.

Now eight years old and last racing just yesterday, Popmaster won at Kempton Park in February 2026 but has not won in his last six races, with his most recent efforts showing a mixed picture of placed runs and disappointing finishes. His most regular partner Tom Marquand has ridden him in 10 races for 1 win, a 10% return that reflects the horse's overall profile — capable of raising his game on the right day, but not doing so often enough to be predictable. At his age and at this level, every suitable day of soft ground feels like it could be his last real chance.
