Pole Star

The real story is Haydock Park. Pole Star has won two of his three races there, which is the kind of win rate that makes a horse worth following. When he won a Class 2 race at Haydock last July, trainer Charlie Johnston's assistant noted something crucial: this is a horse that thrives when he gets into a battle. He was beaten on the turn that day but came back to fight and win, the sort of detail that separates a reliable racer from a one-trick pony. Johnston's yard, based at Middleham Moor in Yorkshire, has sent out 131 winners this season, so there is genuine quality in the operation.

The frustration, though, is that Pole Star hasn't won in his last six races, with finishes scattered between third place and eleventh. He prefers normal ground conditions—winning twice from seven races on standard going, a 29% win rate—and he tends to find Class 2 company stiffer than his record at Haydock suggests he should. Just one win from seven attempts in that grade shows the difference between being a course specialist and being reliably excellent.

Johnston has made it clear he thinks there is more to come. After a run last spring where Pole Star looked rusty on his comeback, the trainer flagged bigger targets and said it would not surprise him to see a significant win this season. With entries in major spring races and a jockey in William Buick willing to experiment with race tactics, there is still a sense that this horse might have one or two decent days ahead. But for now, Pole Star remains what he has always been: a Haydock horse first, and a 4-year-old in need of a win to remind everyone—and perhaps himself—why those early victories mattered.
