The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. A third-place finish is the highlight of the last six runs, with a tenth and a seventh filling out the rest — the dashes in between suggesting the horse has missed races along the way. What is striking is that Poet's Gale raced just one day ago, meaning this is a horse currently in active training and presumably still being aimed at finding that elusive first win. The team clearly believe there is something worth persisting with.
Regular rider Daniel King has been in the saddle for six of those nine races and is still waiting for a breakthrough alongside the horse. Six races together, zero wins — it is the kind of partnership that tests patience on both sides. That said, a jockey sticking with the same horse across six outings suggests there is a belief, or at least a hope, that the right race is still out there.
Trainer A J Martin operates out of Summerhill in Co. Meath and has sent out 15 winners this season, which shows the yard is more than capable of getting horses to the front. The fact that Poet's Gale has not been one of them is not for lack of a competent operation behind it. Sometimes a horse simply needs everything to fall right — the right conditions, the right field, the right day. For Poet's Gale, that day has not come yet. Whether it ever does is the question anyone following this horse will be asking.
