Plastic Paddy

The most interesting number in Plastic Paddy's record is the one attached to Newcastle. Of the nine races it has run there, it has won three — that's 1 in every 3, which is a dramatically better return than anywhere else on its travels. For context, across its whole career the win rate is 15%, but at Newcastle it jumps to 33%. Something about that track suits this horse in a way that's hard to ignore, and it was at Newcastle, back in September 2021, where it got off the mark for the first time. The track clearly brings out something in it.

Where Plastic Paddy is most dangerous is over a mile and one to a mile and two furlongs. At those distances it has won 7 times from 29 races — roughly 1 in 4 — which is a strong return and tells you that this is not a horse being run in the wrong races at the wrong trips. Trainer Tom McGuinness has clearly worked that out. His yard has been quiet this season with just one winner sent out, but Plastic Paddy has been a reliable contributor over the years.

The concern right now is form. The horse last won at Wolverhampton in March 2024 — over two years ago — and has not threatened in any of its last six races, finishing no better than sixth in that spell. At eight years old, horses don't tend to suddenly rediscover top gear from nowhere, and regular jockey Frederick Larson has managed just 2 wins from 14 rides together, or roughly 1 in 7. That's fine, but it doesn't suggest a partnership that has unlocked something special.

Plastic Paddy raced just one day ago, so it remains very much an active runner. If there is a path back to the winner's enclosure, the most logical route runs through Newcastle, over a mile and a bit, on a card where the competition drops to the level it handles best. Whether that moment comes remains to be seen — but the blueprint for what makes this horse tick is pretty clear in the numbers.
