Perfect Part

The story of how Perfect Part ended up in Brian Ellison's yard is worth telling. Brown picked her up cheaply because she was a late foal and on the small side — two things that can put buyers off at a sale. Ellison's yard, based in Norton, North Yorkshire, has sent out 43 winners this season, so this is a team that knows what it is doing, and they spotted something others missed.

Since that Beverley win, though, Perfect Part has found life considerably tougher. She has raced 16 times in total, winning just once — that's roughly 1 in every 16 races — and has gone two full years without returning to the winner's enclosure. Her recent form reads 15th, 7th, 13th, 4th, 6th, 4th, which tells a story of a horse that competes without threatening. Most of her racing has come at the very top level, Class 1, where she has run six times without winning. That is an unforgiving place to race, and it may simply be that her talent, while real, has a ceiling.

She shows slightly more promise over shorter distances — between five and six and a half furlongs — where she has won 1 from 8 races, a 12% win rate, compared to nothing at all over longer trips. At four years old and with a Beverley win already on her record, the question now is whether she can rediscover whatever made that debut so electric.
