At three years old, there's still plenty of time for the penny to drop. Young horses take time to mature, both physically and mentally, and it's not unusual for a horse at this stage to run several races before the training clicks into something you can actually back. The finishing positions are moving in roughly the right direction — from sixth down to fourth and fifth — which at least suggests the horse is learning something each time out.
What does give cause for optimism is who has Pennine Way in their care. Jack Channon's yard at West Ilsley in Berkshire has sent out 46 winners already this season — a serious number that marks this out as one of the more productive operations in the country right now. West Ilsley is a storied training base set in the Berkshire Downs, and a trainer firing at that kind of rate clearly knows how to get a horse ready to run its best. The fact that Pennine Way raced just yesterday and is still considered active suggests the team are keeping the horse busy and looking for the right opportunity to unlock a first win.
No wins and no placed finishes from three races is an honest record — nothing to dress up — but for a three-year-old in a busy, successful yard, it reads less like a dead end and more like unfinished business.
