At Class 5 level — essentially the entry-level tier of British racing — Pebble Island has gone 0 from 4, which means even at the easiest grade available, a win hasn't come. That's a difficult position to be in, because Class 5 is where horses are supposed to find races they can be competitive in. Finishing sixth and ninth in two of the last six outings at least suggests the horse isn't completely out of its depth on every occasion, but the pattern of twelfths is harder to explain away.
The trainer is John C McConnell, who operates out of Stamullen in County Meath and has sent out 38 winners this season — a yard clearly capable of getting horses to perform. That makes Pebble Island something of a puzzle, because the talent is clearly in the stable. Whether more time, a different type of race, or a change in conditions might unlock something remains to be seen, but at 4 years old and 12 races in, the window isn't getting any wider.
