That second place is the one moment of promise in among a lot of mid-field shuffling, and it came and went without a win to follow it up. Pay Attention has not won in its last six races, and with the most recent run coming just yesterday, this is a horse that is very much in the thick of its season right now.

The distance that suits it best appears to be somewhere between a mile and a furlong and a mile and two furlongs. Pay Attention has raced over that range eight times and won once — roughly 1 in every 8 races at those trips, which at 12% is actually the best return you will find anywhere in this horse's record. For comparison, at the level it typically competes at — which represents the lower end of British racing — it has run seven times without a single win. That is a telling detail. A horse that cannot win at the most accessible level of the sport is one that trainers and owners spend a lot of time trying to place just right.

Faye Bramley, who trains Pay Attention from her yard in Lambourn, has had a productive season with 17 winners sent out, so the operation around this horse is clearly capable of winning races. Pay Attention just has not been the one delivering them. Finding the right race, the right trip, and the right day remains the puzzle — and until those things align again, this is a horse that asks its supporters to do exactly what the name suggests.
