England has been refreshingly candid about it. In a stable tour last October, he admitted he had "placed him terribly" — and the evidence backs that up. Two of those runner-up finishes came in races where the winner went on to do something significant. One of the horses that beat him was runner-up at the Punchestown Festival; another won its next three races on the bounce. In other words, Passengerontheship was not losing to ordinary horses. He was losing to horses who were, it turned out, rather good — he was just in the wrong race at the wrong time.

His overall numbers are modest: one win from eleven races, which works out at roughly one in every eleven. Four times he has finished close enough to collect prize money without winning. His most recent six runs read 1, a fall or unseated, a sixth, an eighth, a second, and a second — so the form coming into that Hexham win showed he was at least knocking on the door again after a brief dip. England noted back in October that he stays well and jumps cleanly, calling him "really efficient" despite not being a big horse — which matters, because efficiency over a fence is what keeps horses competitive when size and scope are limited.

The yard itself is in fine form, having sent out 49 winners already this season, so there is clearly a confidence and momentum behind the operation. Whether Passengerontheship can build on his first win and push up into better races remains to be seen, but for a horse whose career looked like a long exercise in near-misses, finally getting that win on the board at Hexham is a genuinely satisfying footnote — and perhaps the start of something more.
