The breeding gives some clues. The father, Cotai Glory, was a quick, sharp sprinter who excelled over short distances, and that speed tends to travel down the generations. The mother's side brings in Empire Maker, an American influence associated with horses that can gallop and stay. Whether Parioca has inherited the father's zip or the mother's stamina — or a useful blend of both — is one of the things the racing world is about to find out.
What works in Parioca's favour is the team behind the horse. Trainer Jack Morland operates out of Newmarket, which is the heartland of British flat racing — a town built around horses, with some of the finest training grounds in the world. Morland's yard has already sent out 16 winners this season, which tells you this is not an operation running on hope. They know what they are doing, and when they bring a horse to the track, it tends to be ready to run.
