Paragon

The recent form makes for honest reading. Over the last six races, Paragon has finished 9th, 6th, 4th, 7th, 4th, and 6th — a pattern of mid-pack efforts with the occasional promising run mixed in. Those two fourth-place finishes are the glimmers of hope the yard will be clinging to, though a ninth isn't easy to brush off. The team, trained by Pam Sly from her base in Thorney, Cambridgeshire, will be watching carefully for the race where it all clicks.

Sly's yard has sent out 7 winners this season, so there is form to be found there. Paragon just hasn't been the one delivering it. At Class 6 — the entry level of British racing, where the competition is at its most accessible — Paragon has run 8 times without winning once. That is a significant detail. Class 6 exists precisely to give horses like this a chance to succeed, and when a horse can't convert at that level, you start to wonder whether a win is genuinely in the locker or whether placing is simply its ceiling. Five places from 15 races means Paragon finishes in the top three roughly 1 in every 3 races, which is not nothing — but it does underline a horse that seems to perform best when the pressure is off and the expectation is low.

Raced just one day ago and still active, Paragon is clearly a horse kept busy and in good health. At four years old, there is still time for improvement — horses can take a while to mature and find their confidence. Whether Paragon eventually breaks through or continues to collect placed money without ever troubling the winner's enclosure is the question worth watching. For now, it's a horse that gives you just enough reason to keep looking, without ever quite delivering the payoff.
