Pam's Sonnet

Trained by Tim Vaughan at his yard in Aberthin in the Vale of Glamorgan, Pam's Sonnet competes at Class 4 level — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing, a long way from the headline events. Vaughan's team has been in decent form this season, sending out 11 winners, so the infrastructure is clearly there. Whether Pam's Sonnet can tap into that remains to be seen. The horse raced just yesterday, which at least shows it is fit and active, and there is always the possibility that experience eventually starts to tell.

For now, though, patience is the watchword. Some horses take time to find their feet, and six races at three years old is still a relatively short career. The question is whether improvement is coming — or whether the finishing positions in the mid-to-high single figures are closer to the ceiling than a temporary dip.
