Paddy The Squire

The numbers back up the improvement. Jockey Andrew Mullen, who rides him regularly, has won four of seventeen races together—a 24% win rate that is substantially better than Paddy's career average of roughly one win in every five races. The horse clearly favours dry, fast ground, where he has won two of six races (33%), and responds well to longer distances between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, winning two of seven attempts at that trip (29%). Hamilton Park itself seems to suit him; his August victory came on ground he loves at a track where he has clearly left an impression. His trainer believes there is still more to come. The horse is naturally lazy at home but saves his energy for the racecourse, and Iain Jardine has been carefully moving him up in trip throughout the season to draw out his best form. At six years old, with the benefit of gelding and the right ground beneath his hooves, Paddy The Squire finally looks like a horse who has found his place.
