Paddockwood raced as recently as yesterday, so this is a horse very much in the thick of its campaign, and younger horses often take time to find their feet. Trainer Ben Pauling, based in Naunton in the Gloucestershire countryside, has had 91 winners this season alone — that is a yard operating with serious momentum, and horses trained there tend to improve with experience and careful placing. When a stable is firing at that rate, even their slower-burning horses are worth keeping an eye on.

Paddockwood hasn't shown the goods yet, but with an active campaign and one of the season's busiest winning yards in its corner, the next few races will tell us a great deal about whether this horse is simply taking time to develop or needs a change of approach to find its level.
