What we do have is the breeding, and it's a decent starting point. The sire, Speightstown, was a brilliant sprinter in North America and has passed that sharp, quick-fire style on to plenty of his offspring. Speed tends to run in the bloodline. The dam is by Medaglia d'Oro, a stallion associated with horses who have a bit more scope and stamina — so on paper, Outfielder has pace on one side and a touch of class on the other. Whether that combination translates to the track is the whole question, and today is when we start finding out.
Two-year-olds are always a puzzle on debut. They're young, still learning, and many improve dramatically from their first race to their second. A win today would be a real statement; a decent run without winning would still tell the team plenty. Either way, the page won't be blank for much longer.
