At three years old, there is time on its side, but the recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. Sent out just yesterday, Out In The Cold is clearly an active project for the yard — and at Class 5, which is the entry level of British racing, it has gone 0 from 3, meaning even at the easiest tier the horse has yet to find a way to compete at the front end of a race. Finishing eighth or ninth in that company suggests the gap between this horse and its rivals is not a small one.
Trainer Simon Pearce operates out of Newmarket, one of the most storied training centres in the world, and his yard has sent out five winners this season — so he clearly knows how to get horses winning. Out In The Cold, though, has not been one of them. Whether the horse needs a different trip, different ground, or simply more time to fill its frame and develop is hard to say from the outside. What is clear is that racing is a patient sport, and three-year-olds can improve sharply and suddenly. For now, though, this is one that remains firmly in the category of horses its trainer is still trying to figure out.
