The break is significant. Nine months is a long time away from the track, and how Our Sonny handles the return will tell us whether the time off was therapeutic—a chance to mature and strengthen—or whether it suggests the horse was struggling enough to need a complete reset. The two races on the record, finishing outside the places both times, suggest this is still a work in progress rather than a horse in the firing line for imminent success. Thomas Mullins's yard has been modest this season, recording just two winners, so there are no obvious signs of a training operation in sparkling form. All the same, our Sonny gets another chance to show what it can do on the track. Whether the long rest proves the making of the horse, or simply a pause in what has been an unproductive start, will be the story to watch.
