Clive Cox, who trains Orthodox out of Lambourn in Berkshire, has been in fine form this season. His yard has sent out 48 winners already, which tells you this is not a quiet operation stumbling across the occasional result — it is a busy, well-organised team that knows how to prepare young horses. Landing a debut winner is always a good sign, but doing it from a yard firing at this rate suggests Orthodox was ready when it mattered.

There is not much more to say yet, and that is almost the point. One run, one win, racing just yesterday — Orthodox is right at the very beginning of what could be a long story. The interesting question is what comes next.
