That single win came at Newmarket on 12 July 2025, which matters more than it might sound. Newmarket is the spiritual home of flat racing in Britain, and breaking through there as a young horse is no small thing. At a distance of seven furlongs to a mile, Orion's Belt has won one from three races — roughly one in three — which is actually a strong conversion rate and suggests the trip suits well. The problem is that four of its six races have come at Class 1 level, the very top tier of British racing, where it has yet to win. That is not a disgrace — these are the hardest races to win, filled with the best horses in training — but it does mean the ability has been tested at the highest level and found wanting so far.
The recent form reads 9-2-6-3-1-4 from most recent to oldest, which paints a picture of a horse that peaked in the middle of its career and has since found things tougher. That second place and third place show it can mix it competitively, but the ninth on its most recent outing — now six months ago — was a step backwards.
That six-month absence is the biggest question mark heading into its return. Horses can come back from breaks in better shape or worse, and there is simply no way to know which this will be until it runs again. What helps is the yard it returns from: Richard Hannon's operation at Herridge in Wiltshire has sent out 113 winners this season alone, which is the output of a yard that knows how to have horses ready to perform. When Hannon's team send a horse out after a long break, they generally know what they are doing.
Orion's Belt is a horse still searching for consistency, still trying to make its mark at the top level. The talent is there in glimpses. Whether it can string those glimpses together is the question worth watching.
