Optimatum

The distance profile is one of the more interesting threads to pull on. Over a mile and one to a mile and two furlongs, Optimatum has won 1 from 7 races — roughly 1 in every 7 attempts at those trips, which is actually the best version of this horse. That Leicester win in June came at a mile and change, and it represents the sweet spot where Optimatum looks most at home. The fact that it has run seven times at those distances and only converted once suggests the horse is competitive at that level without being dominant, but the win proves the ability is there.

What's harder to explain is the Class 5 record: eight races at that level and not a single win. For context, Class 5 is towards the lower end of the racing ladder in Britain, and you'd normally expect a horse to find its winning opportunities there. Optimatum hasn't managed it yet, which makes that Leicester victory — wherever it falls in the class structure — feel all the more significant as proof the horse can get its head in front.

Trainer Rod Millman operates out of Kentisbeare in Devon, and the yard has been in fine form this season with 42 winners already sent out — roughly one winner every few days, which is the kind of momentum that keeps a stable buzzing. Millman is known for placing horses patiently, and Optimatum's recent form — back-to-back second-place finishes in the last six runs — suggests the horse may be rounding back into form. It raced just one day ago, so it is very much in the thick of things right now. Whether a second career win is close may depend on finding the right race at the right trip, but the signs are at least pointing in the right direction.
