Trained by Charlie Fellowes out of Newmarket — one of the historic heartlands of British racing — Ongombo is in capable hands. Fellowes' yard has already sent out 17 winners this season, which is a solid indication that horses leaving that stable are fit, ready, and well-prepared. An eighth-place finish on debut is far from a disaster; many horses simply need the experience of race day before they begin to show their true ability.
With only one race to go on, there is not much of a pattern to read yet. The only honest thing to say is that this is a young horse at the very beginning of its story, trained by someone who clearly knows how to get winners out the door. Whether Ongombo turns out to be anything special is a question the next few months will answer.
