On Key

The recent form makes for intriguing reading. In the last six races On Key has finished 5th, 2nd, 4th, 2nd, 8th, and 5th — two places, two mid-pack finishes, one poor run, and one more where it just could not quite get there. The pair of seconds in that sequence is telling: this is a horse that gets competitive, finds its position, and then runs into something better on the day. It raced just yesterday, so it is very much in the thick of things right now.

Ryan Sexton has been the regular partner, riding On Key in 7 of its 19 races without getting that win. The two of them have developed a working relationship without yet finding the right moment to convert. Scott Dixon's yard has been in good form this season — 33 winners is a healthy tally — so it is not as though the operation lacks confidence or ability. On Key simply seems to be the one in the string that keeps making you wait.

The horse has raced eight times at Class 5 level, which is the entry level of British racing, and has not won any of them. That is the puzzle at the heart of this profile: a horse finishing second on multiple occasions at the lower end of the sport should, in theory, be capable of winning one. Whether it needs a different trip, a different surface, or simply a race where the right rival does not show up is the question Dixon and Sexton will be trying to answer. For now, On Key remains one of racing's great nearly horses — always there, never quite first.
