But his trainer George Boughey, based at Newmarket and having an outstanding season with 105 winners already on the board, seems to believe that ceiling might be about to shift. After a recent run at Doncaster, Boughey was unusually enthusiastic, calling it "a massive race" and suggesting Oliver Show looks like he might have a little more to give than previously thought. That is a meaningful thing for a trainer to say publicly about a horse they had thought was near his limit.

The background adds some texture too. Oliver Show was sent to race in Bahrain over the winter, was outpaced over six furlongs there, and had to be brought home — the Newbury Spring Cup and potentially the Guineas meeting at Newmarket are now pencilled in as targets, with the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot as a longer-term aim. Jockey Billy Loughnane, who knows him better than anyone having ridden him 13 times, has won on him 3 times together — a win rate of 23%, which is notably better than the horse's overall average. The partnership is worth watching. Oliver Show raced just yesterday, so the next chapter is not far away.
