Old Gregorian

The horse has a particularly strong relationship with Derek Fox in the saddle. In seven races together, Fox has ridden him to 3 wins — that's 43%, or nearly 1 in every 2 races, which is a genuinely striking number. When those two line up together, it's worth paying attention. He is trained by Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore out of their yard in Milnathort, Perth and Kinross — a stable that has sent out 49 winners this season alone, so Old Gregorian is part of a serious, high-functioning operation.

His biggest calling card is Kelso, where he has won 2 from 6 races and recorded his first career win back in October 2023. Racecourses can suit particular horses for all kinds of reasons — the bends, the undulations, the way the ground rides — and when a horse keeps coming back to win at the same track, that familiarity tends to be real rather than coincidence. He also handles normal ground well, winning 2 of his 5 races in those conditions.

Most recently, Old Gregorian won at Wetherby in October 2025, just six months ago, and is currently active having raced as recently as yesterday. That Wetherby win came on his debut over fences, and while a rival did unseat that day, his trainer was keen to point out that his jumping was genuinely slick — not lucky. His jockey Alan Doyle agreed, noting that the win gave the horse real confidence and that he travels quickly over his obstacles. Both trainer and jockey made the same point independently: step him up to two and a half miles, and there is more to come.

At Class 4 level — the middle tier of everyday racing rather than the headline stuff — he has won 2 from 7, or just under 1 in 3. He has not yet been asked to beat the best, but with his jumping improving and a longer trip on the horizon, the story may not be finished yet.
