The recent form makes for interesting reading. A run of 3-5-11-2-8-13 shows a horse that is wildly inconsistent — a second place finish sitting alongside an eleventh and a thirteenth in the same sequence. When it shows up, it genuinely competes. When it doesn't, it's struggling near the back of the field. That kind of unpredictability is one of the harder puzzles in racing: you know the ability is in there somewhere, because that second place proves it, but getting it to fire consistently is another matter entirely.
Jockey David Allan has ridden Off Spin five times without finding the winner's enclosure, and the partnership has yet to click in the way the yard would hope. It is worth noting, though, that the horse is in active training with Tim Easterby at Great Habton in North Yorkshire — a yard that has sent out 126 winners this season alone, which is a serious operation by any measure. Easterby clearly knows how to get horses winning. The question for Off Spin is whether its turn comes at all. Most of its races have come at Class 5 level — the lower end of the British racing ladder, the kind of races specifically designed to give horses like this a chance — and it has yet to win any of the six races it has run at that level.
Off Spin raced just yesterday, so this is a horse very much in the thick of its season. At four years old, it is young enough that the team might reasonably believe improvement is still possible. But 13 races without a win, including six at a level where winning should be achievable, means patience is genuinely being tested. For now, Off Spin is the horse that keeps suggesting it might, without ever quite doing it.
