Oceti is trained by Richard Hannon at his yard in Herridge, Wiltshire — one of the most productive operations in British racing. Hannon's team has already sent out 118 winners this season alone, which gives you a sense of the scale and quality of the setup this horse belongs to. When a trainer of that calibre says he was "delighted" with a run, it is worth taking seriously, even if the finishing position does not look pretty at first glance.
That recent run came over a mile at Newbury, where Oceti raced prominently at the front of the pack — an encouraging sign that the horse is showing some natural confidence and willingness to compete. Hannon's honest assessment was that the horse was "a bit gassy", meaning he burnt through his energy too quickly and did not see out the full distance as well as he might. The solution, in Hannon's view, is straightforward: drop back to six furlongs and find a race that suits a horse who clearly wants to bowl along at the front rather than conserve his energy over a longer trip. Shorter distances reward that kind of bold, front-running style, and it is a logical switch.
Still only three years old and, by Hannon's own admission, handled carefully last season to allow him time to develop, Oceti is very much a work in progress. The improvement over the winter that Hannon mentioned suggests the horse has physically strengthened up, and the yard clearly believes the right conditions and the right distance will unlock something
