His most recent win, at Hereford in November 2025, was the kind of performance that makes a race look almost unfair. Held back at the tail of the field, Oakley came from last to first over two miles and three and a half furlongs, making up ground so smoothly that the handicapper immediately slapped an extra 8 pounds on his back — the biggest weight mark of his career. That is the sport's version of a tax on excellence: when a horse wins too easily, officials raise what it has to carry in future races to give rivals a fairer chance. Oakley is now paying that price, and it explains why he hasn't won since.
Trainer Mrs C Williams, based at Llancarfan in the Vale of Glamorgan, knows her horse well enough to understand the conditions he needs. Oakley wants to be held up and delivered late — get the tactics wrong and he simply doesn't fire, as he showed at Chepstow next time out when he never threatened. The yard, which has sent out three winners this season, had him tuned up for a run at Warwick in January, only for the meeting to be abandoned. Those frustrations are part of racing life, but they matter for a horse whose form can go cold when momentum is lost.
The partnership with jockey Danny Mullins has so far produced nothing from seven races together, which is a notable blank given that Mullins is an experienced rider. It suggests Oakley remains a work in progress in terms of finding the right combination at the right moment — he is a horse who needs everything to align.
What makes Oakley interesting is that he raced just one day ago and is clearly still active, meaning whatever comes next is almost immediate. He sits on a career-high weight mark, he needs patient handling, and he has already shown he can produce a stunning performance out of nowhere. For a small Welsh yard, a horse like this — talented but complicated — is exactly the kind of puzzle worth solving.
