That kind of consistency between horse and rider matters. A jockey who knows a horse's rhythms, its quirks, when to ask and when to wait, is worth a great deal, and these two clearly have an understanding.

Nick Gifford trains Northern Poet out of Findon in West Sussex, and the yard has been in good form this season with 12 winners. Gifford has clearly found a level that suits this horse — Class 4 races, one step below the top tier, where Northern Poet has won 4 from 9, a remarkable 44% win rate. Put simply, nearly half of all its runs at that level have ended in victory. That is not luck; that is a horse operating in exactly the right company.

Plumpton is Northern Poet's spiritual home. Two wins from 6 races there, including that first career victory back in November 2022, suggest the tight, turning track suits the way this horse moves and races. Some horses thrive on particular courses for reasons that are hard to pin down — the bends, the ground, the atmosphere — and Plumpton clearly brings something out in Northern Poet.

The recent form tells a more complicated story. Five races without a win, punctuated by a victory at Warwick in March 2025, and five blank runs since. But here is the thing — Northern Poet raced just one day ago and is still active at 11. That alone earns some respect. And with a horse that wins 3 in every 10 races overall and nearly half at its preferred level, a quiet spell does not mean the spark has gone. It just means the right day has not arrived yet.
