Night Bear

The peak of Night Bear's career came in a concentrated burst back in 2022. A first win at Haydock Park in July of that year was followed just two months later by a victory in a Class 2 race at Nottingham — one of the better races in Britain — which stands as the high-water mark of its career. Winning at that level is genuinely hard, and the fact that Night Bear did it at all puts it above the average horse you'd see plodding around a midweek card. Since then, though, the wins have dried up. The last time it crossed the line first was at Brighton in June 2024, which is now nearly two years ago, and it hasn't won in any of its last six races.

The clearest thing the form book says about Night Bear is that it loves fast, dry ground. Three wins from just five races in those conditions — that's a 60% win rate — is a remarkable number, especially compared to how it performs overall. When the sun has been out and the ground is firm, this horse is a different animal. It also finds its best form over a mile and three furlongs to a mile and four furlongs, winning 3 of 19 races (16%) at those trips, which is comfortably its strongest distance range.

Most of Night Bear's racing comes at Class 6, the lower end of the race grades, where it has won just 1 from 21. Regular jockey Jack Doughty hasn't managed a win together in nine attempts, though that may say more about the circumstances than the partnership. Trainer Tony Carroll has had a productive season — 134 winners from his Worcestershire yard is a serious tally — and Night Bear, having raced just yesterday, is clearly still being kept busy. Whether dry ground and the right trip arrive together again before retirement does is the only remaining question worth asking.
