Newport

That one career win came at Musselburgh on 8th December 2025, and it arrived at a distance between a mile and six furlongs and two miles — the longer end of the spectrum, where Newport clearly finds its rhythm. In five races over that range, Newport has won once in every five, a noticeably better record than it manages at shorter trips. The lesson is fairly clear: give this horse a proper test of stamina and its chances improve significantly.

Recent form has been encouraging without being spectacular. In its last six runs, Newport has finished second twice and third twice, with a fifth thrown in — which means it has placed in four of those six races and has been racing just yesterday, so it is very much an active participant this season. The yard it comes from, trained by Iain Jardine down at Carrutherstown, has been in good nick this season with 57 winners sent out, so Newport is operating in a well-functioning setup that knows how to get horses ready to run.

At Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter tier where most everyday racehorses spend the majority of their time — Newport has won 1 from 6, roughly one in every six, which is a respectable conversion at that grade. Its regular partner Hugh Morgan has yet to get a win from their five outings together, but given Newport's overall record, that probably says more about the horse's general win rate than anything specific to the partnership.

The big question with Newport is whether another win is coming. It has been five months since Musselburgh, and the placed efforts keep coming without the breakthrough. But a horse that places this often, over the right trip, for a trainer having a productive season, is never far away from finding its moment again.
