Never So Brave

What makes Never So Brave interesting is how dramatically its fortunes have shifted depending on conditions. On fast, dry ground the horse is a different animal entirely, winning 3 of its 6 races on such surfaces — a 50% win rate that stands in stark contrast to its overall record. Ascot, too, brings out the best in it: 2 wins from 5 races at that track alone suggests this is a horse that handles the place well. But ground tells only part of the story. Never So Brave also found its feet in the spring and summer of 2024, winning three races in five months from April through June, including two at Class 2 level. That winning spell culminated in victory at York in August 2025, a Class 1 triumph that ranked among the best of its career.

Trained by A M Balding at Kingsclere, the horse is under the care of a yard regularly finding winners — 202 this season alone. Yet for Never So Brave, time is becoming a factor. A year without a win at its age, combined with inconsistent recent form, suggests it may be approaching the end of its competitive window. Whether it can rediscover the form that brought those top-level victories remains to be seen, but a return to fast ground and a race suited to its strengths might be just what it needs.
