Trained by Donald Whillans out of Hawick in the Scottish Borders, Naturalia has spent most of its career competing at Class 5, the bread-and-butter level of British racing where the fields are competitive and the margins are tight. At that level, Naturalia has won 1 from 14 races — roughly 1 in every 14 — which tells you this is a horse that runs consistently without always converting. Whillans has had 9 winners from his yard this season, so the operation is producing results; Naturalia just needs things to fall right.

That is a dramatically different profile from its overall record, and it suggests this is a horse that genuinely appreciates a thorough test of stamina. A horse that places as often as it wins — eight places from 26 races alongside those two wins — is one that keeps running its race without quite getting its nose in front. The longer trips remain the obvious place to look for improvement.
