In races run over 5 furlongs to 6½ furlongs, he has won 1 from just 3 attempts — that's a 33% win rate, which is excellent by any measure. Compare that to his record at his most common level, Class 4, where he has run 7 times without winning once, and you start to see a horse that may simply need things set up just right to show his best. The shorter, sharper trips seem to suit him, and finding the right opportunity at that trip could be the key to unlocking another win.

Trainer Edward Bethell, who runs a busy and productive yard in Middleham — 62 winners in the current season alone — has been watching Native Instinct closely and has a clear view of what the horse needs. After a below-par first run of the season, he showed up much better second time out when dropped back to 6 furlongs at Pontefract, finishing with a rattle. Bethell noted he'd probably benefit from softer, wetter ground than he had that day, and came out of the race sound. The trainer is keeping his options open on distance — 6 furlongs or a sharp 7 furlongs — but believes there is more to come. Jockey Callum Rodriguez, who knows this horse well from 7 races in the saddle together, winning once at a rate of roughly 1 in 7, will be hoping that next step forward arrives soon.
