Native Honey

Ayr is Native Honey's playground. The horse has won 3 of 5 races at the track, an astonishing record that marks it as a genuine course specialist. This is the kind of form that catches the eye of people who study racing seriously: a horse that simply performs better in one place than anywhere else, for reasons that might be down to the track itself, the way the racing unfolds there, or simply a horse that has learned to handle it. That most recent win came just five weeks ago, in early July, so this is not old form—Native Honey is actively running and still winning.

The horse excels over distances between seven furlongs and a mile, winning 3 of 11 races at those trip lengths—a 27 percent win rate that doubles its overall record. Trainer Jim Goldie, based at Uplawmoor in Lanarkshire, is working with a horse that has clear preferences, and those preferences are being respected. The yard itself is in excellent form this season with 88 winners already saddled. Recent runs show Native Honey capable of close finishes: a win two runs back, a place a run before that, and in between a narrow defeat at Doncaster when the horse ducked right at the crucial moment while challenging for the lead. Goldie has noted that Native Honey hasn't always handled every track—a bump at Musselburgh cost ground at the wrong time—but at Ayr, and at the distances where it runs best, this is a horse that delivers. Still active after racing just a day ago, Native Honey remains a player in similar races.
