That doubles the overall win rate, and it matters. When the ground dries out, this is a different horse. The distances also help: between a mile and three furlongs and a mile and four furlongs, Mythical Guest has won 2 from 10, which is 20% — 1 in every 5. That is a genuinely solid figure at this level, and it suggests a horse that has found its sweet spot in terms of trip.

The partnership with jockey Callum Shepherd is the most striking number in the file. Two wins from just five races together — that is 40%, or 2 in every 5, which is exceptional at any level of the sport. Most top jockeys at the highest level win around 1 in 5 or 6 races. The fact that Shepherd and Mythical Guest have clicked at that rate is not a coincidence worth ignoring.

The downside is timing. Mythical Guest last won at Newmarket in May 2024 — nearly two years ago now — and has not scored in the six races since, with recent form reading 10th, 3rd, 2nd, 8th, 4th, 4th. The good news is that third and second show the horse is still placing, still competitive. Margarson's yard has sent out 10 winners already this season, so the operation is in form. The question is simply whether the conditions line up: dry ground, the right distance, and ideally Shepherd in the saddle. When those three things come together, Mythical Guest has shown it can win. The wait for the next one just requires a little faith.
