What's quietly encouraging about Mythe Bridge is the shape of its recent form. After a run of blanks, it started finding the frame — two second-place finishes followed by a third — before going quiet again in its last three outings. That middle patch shows the ability is there, even if consistency has been the missing ingredient. For a horse that has never won, you want to see evidence it can at least get competitive, and those placed runs provide exactly that.

The partnership with jockey Stan Sheppard hasn't cracked the code yet either — five rides together and no wins between them, though it's worth noting they haven't had much luck to call on. At the level Mythe Bridge typically runs at, Class 4, it has gone 0 from 4, which means it hasn't yet managed to beat the horses it's most regularly asked to compete against. That's the puzzle Henry Daly's yard in Ludlow will be trying to solve.

Daly himself is no small operation — 17 winners sent out already this season is a healthy return that speaks to a yard in decent form. The frustration for everyone involved will be that Mythe Bridge hasn't been able to add to that tally. At eight years old, time isn't exactly on its side, but horses can and do find their moment later in their careers. For now, Mythe Bridge remains one of racing's stubborn what-ifs: placed enough times to suggest a win is in there somewhere, but yet to prove it on the day that counts.
