My Mate Kev

His first win came at Chelmsford on 31 October 2024, and his most recent at Newmarket in May 2025 — the home track of trainer Chris Dwyer, whose yard operates out of the famous racing town in Suffolk. Dwyer's team has sent out 8 winners this season, so it's a stable that knows how to get a horse ready to win. The fact that My Mate Kev's best result came on their doorstep is probably not a coincidence.

The level he competes at is worth understanding. Class 5 is towards the lower end of the British racing ladder, where horses are closely matched and winning still takes genuine ability. At that level, My Mate Kev has won 2 from 7, which works out at 29% — closer to 1 in 3. That's a meaningful number. It tells you he's competitive when pitched at the right grade, even if he's found life harder in his other races.

The recent run of form is harder to defend, though. His last six results read 7-6-5-12-9-12 — the numbers going in the wrong direction entirely, with those two twelfth-place finishes suggesting days when very little went right. He hasn't won since May 2025, which is now roughly 12 months ago. For a horse with a relatively short career record, that's a long dry spell.

He raced just yesterday, so the yard — sorry, the team — are clearly keeping him busy and looking for a way back to the winner's enclosure. At his best and at the right level, My Mate Kev has shown he can get his nose in front. Whether another win is around the corner probably depends on whether Dwyer can find the right spot for him. When it clicks, it clicks. It just hasn't clicked in a while.
