The key to understanding him is ground. On normal conditions, he has won 4 from 12 races — that is a 33% win rate, meaning he wins roughly 1 in every 3 times the ground suits him. On anything wet or soft, he is a different animal entirely. His trainer is blunt about it: "He must have fast ground." This is not a horse you run in the mud and hope for the best. When the conditions are right, however, jockey Paul Mulrennan summed him up neatly after a run at York: "He's all speed — but for a horse with so much speed, he has a great mind." That combination of pace and temperament is rarer than it sounds.

His most productive partnership is with Alex Jary, who has ridden him to 5 of his 6 wins from 25 races together — a win rate of 20%, or roughly 1 in every 5 rides. Redcar is his happiest hunting ground, where he has won 2 from just 5 visits. Most of his races come at Class 4 level, the middle tier of everyday competition, where he has won 2 from 15 — workmanlike rather than spectacular, but the wins tend to come when conditions align.

His last win came at Doncaster in July 2025, where jockey Faye McManoman was effusive afterwards: "Muker really tries for you and everything was perfect. He's so genuine, tries so hard." Six races have passed since without a winner, and Tinkler has been candid about why — the horse got wound up before the start at Southwell recently, anticipated the gates, and got left behind. He is an unpredictable character, the trainer admits, but one with real ability. The plan now is a break and a fresh start next season, on fast ground, where he belongs.
